Internal Detox Therapies

1. Snehana (स्नेहन) – Oleation Therapy

Snehana is the process of applying medicated oils both externally (Abhyanga) and internally (internal oleation or snehapana) to lubricate the body and soften toxins for elimination. It enhances circulation, promotes flexibility, and deeply nourishes the tissues. Snehana is usually the first step in Panchakarma as it prepares the body for detox. It’s particularly beneficial in joint disorders, stiffness, skin dryness, fatigue, and stress.

2. Swedana (स्वेदन) – Steam Therapy

Swedana is a therapeutic sweating process using herbal steam. It opens up the body’s channels, dilates the pores, and helps in the removal of toxins through sweat. Swedana reduces muscle stiffness, joint pain, heaviness, and water retention, and is commonly done after Snehana for best results. It provides a deep sense of relaxation and is especially effective in respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions.

3. Nasya (नस्य) – Nasal Cleansing Therapy

Nasya involves administering medicated oils or herbal extracts into the nostrils to cleanse and nourish the head, brain, and sensory organs. This therapy is extremely helpful for individuals suffering from headaches, sinusitis, migraine, thyroid imbalance, hair loss, snoring, and facial paralysis. Nasya rejuvenates the mind, clears toxins from the head region, and enhances breathing and concentration.

4. Vaman (वमन) – Controlled Emesis

Used here as part of detox and not as a primary therapy, internal Vaman involves the use of herbal medicines to induce vomiting and expel excess Kapha toxins from the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is recommended for patients with chronic colds, cough, sinus problems, asthma, obesity, skin diseases, and PCOD. It clears the respiratory and digestive tracts and boosts metabolism.

5. Basti (बस्ती) – Enema with Herbal Decoctions

Basti is a therapeutic enema treatment using medicated oils or herbal decoctions. It is ideal for treating Vata-related imbalances such as joint disorders, back pain, infertility, sciatica, constipation, and menstrual disorders. Basti is deeply rejuvenating, strengthens the colon, and supports long-term health and vitality. It is considered the most important among all Panchakarma therapies.

6. Virechan (विरेचन) – Purgation for Detox

Virechan purifies the lower gastrointestinal tract and liver through mild purgation using herbal preparations. It eliminates excess Pitta toxins, balances bile, and improves liver function. Virechan is effective in acidity, jaundice, liver disorders, skin problems, and hormonal imbalance. The body feels lighter, skin glows, and the digestive system becomes more efficient.

7. Raktamokshan (रक्तमोक्षण) – Blood Cleansing Therapy

Raktamokshan is a detox therapy aimed at purifying the blood. It is particularly effective for skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, acne, and conditions like gout, varicose veins, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis. By removing impure or stagnant blood, this therapy improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and restores natural complexion and energy.
