Panchakarma Therapies

1. Vaman (वमन) – Therapeutic Emesis

Vaman is a controlled process of induced vomiting using herbal decoctions to eliminate excess Kapha from the body. This treatment is highly effective in conditions like asthma, chronic cold, sinusitis, allergies, skin disorders, obesity, and PCOD. Vaman clears the respiratory tract, reduces inflammation, and strengthens immunity. It also improves digestion and metabolism by removing Kapha-related toxins from the stomach and upper body.

2. Virechan (विरेचन) – Purgation Therapy

Virechan involves the oral administration of purgative herbs to cleanse the intestines and liver. It targets excess Pitta dosha, which is responsible for issues related to the liver, skin, digestion, and blood impurities. Conditions like hyperacidity, liver disorders, psoriasis, eczema, constipation, and hormonal imbalances are effectively treated with Virechan. It not only purifies the gastrointestinal tract but also enhances clarity of mind and complexion.

3. Basti (बस्ती) – Medicated Enema Therapy

Basti is considered the most important among Panchakarma treatments, especially for Vata-related disorders. In this therapy, medicated oils or decoctions are administered through the rectum, allowing deep tissue detoxification and nourishment. It is highly beneficial for arthritis, sciatica, infertility, paralysis, digestive problems, back pain, menstrual issues, and neurological disorders. Basti improves immunity, delays aging, and supports regeneration of tissues.

4. Nasya (नस्य) – Nasal Detoxification

Nasya is the administration of medicated oils or herbal juices through the nose, the gateway to the brain and head region. It is highly effective in treating headaches, migraine, sinusitis, thyroid imbalance, hair fall, facial paralysis, and memory loss. Nasya clears toxins from the nasal passages, enhances mental clarity, and improves the function of the sensory organs. It is also an essential therapy for psychological wellness and stress management.

5. Raktamokshan (रक्तमोक्षण) – Bloodletting Therapy

Raktamokshan is a specialized procedure for cleansing the blood and treating blood-borne disorders. It helps in the treatment of psoriasis, acne, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and skin allergies. Raktamokshan can be done through leech therapy or controlled venesection and is especially beneficial for Pitta-related imbalances. It improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and purifies the entire system.

1. Snehana (स्नेहन) – Oleation Therapy

Snehana is the process of applying medicated oils both externally (Abhyanga) and internally (internal oleation or snehapana) to lubricate the body and soften toxins for elimination. It enhances circulation, promotes flexibility, and deeply nourishes the tissues. Snehana is usually the first step in Panchakarma as it prepares the body for detox. It’s particularly beneficial in joint disorders, stiffness, skin dryness, fatigue, and stress.

2. Swedana (स्वेदन) – Steam Therapy

Swedana is a therapeutic sweating process using herbal steam. It opens up the body’s channels, dilates the pores, and helps in the removal of toxins through sweat. Swedana reduces muscle stiffness, joint pain, heaviness, and water retention, and is commonly done after Snehana for best results. It provides a deep sense of relaxation and is especially effective in respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions.

Indications: Stress, Anxiety, Insomnia, Migraine, Hypertension, Depression, Paralysis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s
Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing therapy where a continuous stream of warm medicated oil is poured gently over the forehead. It calms the mind and nervous system, balances Vata-Pitta, and improves sleep quality, mental clarity, and emotional stability. Shirodhara is often recommended in cases of psychological disorders, chronic headache, and neurodegenerative conditions.

2. Janu Basti (जानुबस्ति)

Indications: Knee Pain, Arthritis, Ligament Injury, Joint Degeneration
In this therapy, warm medicated oil is pooled over the knee joint using a specially made dough ring. It nourishes the cartilage, reduces inflammation, improves joint flexibility, and relieves pain associated with osteoarthritis and injuries. Ideal for elderly patients and athletes experiencing chronic knee stress.

3. Kati Basti (कटिबस्ति)

Indications: Lower Back Pain, Sciatica, Lumbar Spondylosis, Slip Disc
Kati Basti is the retention of warm herbal oil on the lower back region. It relieves stiffness, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the spine and discs. Often recommended for those with sedentary lifestyles, disc bulges, and nerve compression issues.

4. Hriday Basti (हृदयबस्ति)

Indications: Heart Blockage, Chest Discomfort, Valvular Heart Conditions (like Mitral Regurgitation)
This heart-focused therapy involves pooling warm, medicated ghee or oil on the chest area to improve circulation, reduce emotional stress, and nourish cardiac muscles. It is a supportive therapy for individuals with heart-related issues when combined with internal herbs and lifestyle corrections.

5. Greeva Basti (ग्रीवाबस्ति)

Indications: Cervical Spondylosis, Neck Pain, Stiffness, Frozen Shoulder
Greeva Basti is done by retaining warm oil over the neck region, which improves blood circulation, reduces nerve compression, and softens stiff muscles. It’s ideal for professionals with poor posture, computer strain, or chronic cervical issues.

6. Agnikarma (अग्निकर्म)

Indications: Painful Conditions, Warts, Fibroma, Tendonitis, Muscular Stiffness
Agnikarma is a specialized thermal cautery procedure used in Ayurvedic surgery and pain management. It involves application of a heated metallic tool over the affected area to instantly relieve localized pain, muscle spasm, or chronic inflammatory conditions. It is non-surgical, safe, and leaves no scars, making it excellent for treating joint and tendon issues.

7. Viddha Karma (विद्धकर्म)

Indications: Sciatica, Muscular Pain, Localized Stiffness, Nerve Entrapment
Viddha Karma is an Ayurvedic dry-needling therapy where a fine needle or probe is used at specific marma (vital) points to release muscle knots, improve nerve flow, and relieve deep-seated pain. It’s especially effective in sciatic pain, frozen shoulder, and localized stiffness.
